A Word On Our Indian Mound
Mound-building Indians lived in the great region from the Mississippi River eastward to the Atlantic Ocean, and southward to the Gulf of Mexico and into Florida. They built thousands of mounds and earthworks of different sizes and forms. They settled in great numbers along the rivers of Ohio, which was their chosen land. More than five thousand mounds have been located within the state of Ohio.
The mound-building Indians built their mounds for several purposes. The burial mounds were most numerous and served as monuments to the dead. Next in number were the enclosure earthworks. Some enclosures were built on flat land in the form of circles, squares, rectangles and octagons. Hilltop enclosures were circular in form and were used for tribal ceremonies. The mound here at the campground is known as an effigy mound. This type of mound was built in the image of birds and animals. From an air-view, our mound resembles the shape of a turtle. The Indians used these mounds for religious ceremonies, and for tribal meetings.
Many pioneers who settled in the Huron County area discovered mounds on their farms or nearby rivers. As in the case of our mound here at the campground, farmers' fields surround the mound and the Vermilion River is just a short distance away. In the past, many locals would come out after these fields were plowed and discovered artifacts such as stone hammers, axes, pestles, and arrowheads.
Before the campground was established, several archeologists from the Columbus area notified us of their wish to open and explore our mound. Their requests were denied in order to preserve the natural beauty and state of the Indian mound for our campers.
Don't leave Indian Trail without taking a walk with the family to the Indian Mound. (approx. 1/2 mi. -15 min. walk).
